She insisted on serving him breakfast. The food on the plate showed a knack for presentation.

“Thank you,” Elliot said as Jacklyn handed him his plate before filling her own.

They sat on the couch he’d slept on instead of sitting at the table. Elliot pulled the wooden center table up so that they could rest down their coffee cups. The informality of it all appealed to him.

He’d always eaten at the table the morning after he’d stayed with a woman at a hotel. But this was a first. Then again, so was not sleeping with the woman.

“I have to go to New York tomorrow, so I won’t be flying in to D.C. with you. I have some business to take care of and will be there for a week.”

Jacklyn nodded.

Elliot smiled. She didn’t nibble or pick at her plate. Something he’d seen many times before.

“Are there certain months you’re generally there?” Jacklyn looked up from her plate.

“I spend a lot of time there in the summer and fall. New York has great theatre.” Elliot smiled. He knew Jacklyn would probably love Broadway. He shook his head; he had to get to business. “I’ve set up an account for you and you’ll get keys to my home.”

“That’s not necessary. I have my own—”

“It’ll look too suspicious if you don’t have keys.”

She nodded and looked down demurely. “Thanks for the check. I’m going to put things in place while you’re away.”

Elliot smiled. Jacklyn was anticipating his return to her and he found that he liked the sound of that.

“When I get back, you’ll get the commission.”

Her cheeks reddened. “It’s not necessary.”

“I insist.” Elliot bit into his croissant. He licked the strawberry jam on his lips. Jacklyn’s eyes were on them and he smiled. She quickly diverted her gaze.

Elliot chewed, thinking of all that needed to be done. “You’ll have to stay at my house sometimes.”

Jacklyn looked at him. Though she didn’t say anything, he saw the why in her eyes.

“A man needs a wife in his house to make it a home.”
